Like any other sport, not all people are inclined to play golf. Obviously, it isn’t for everyone. Not all carry a liking for the game and even the most serious sports fan will even put limitations where the green is concerned. Why is this so?

For starters, golf is cost-prohibitive. Even if the idea of golf appeals to an individual, the cost will often prevent him or her from taking a serious interest in the game. You have to invest in decent golf apparel to begin with. Other golf equipment such as the clubs, balls and others do cost a fortune despite the best bargains you can find. Then, there are the lessons that need to be learned and even if you can find a golf pro who will teach you the basics of golf for $25 an hour, that will still add up to your initial investment. A golf club membership costs money, too.

Then, there’s the issue of the pace of play. For those who would rather see a lot of action on the arena, golf is definitely not the game for them. Like chess, figuring the next move needs a certain degree of analysis that cannot and must not be rushed. True, it takes forever for some players to finally take a stroke, but that is part of the game. Unfortunately, for the action-oriented, it can be a bit boring.

Another reason why golf does not appeal to some people is that it has never been fully able to let-go of its elitist image. Admittedly, it has gone more mainstream compared to its reputation in the previous years, but still the exclusive “clubby” atmosphere has given it the stigma as being only a game reserved for the rich. The fact that it is an expensive sport in itself further perpetrates this image.

Finally, golf isn’t for everyone because most of those who play it are already retirees. While the popularity of Tiger Woods has done a lot in encouraging the younger generation to take part in this sport, it’s not as popular among the majority of “pre-pension” population who would rather play basketball or baseball.

Golf certainly isn’t for everyone, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a game for those who enjoy extreme skill, talent and precision. For as long as there are those who value these traits, golf will definitely be here to stay.
