Themed Chess Sets – Revolutionary War Era
In 1775 the conflict was under way between the existing 13 British Colonies in North America and their home land, Great Britain. In the early part of the 1700’s the population in the colonies was reported to be approximately 250,000 people. By the year 1770 this number had escalated to 2.5 million. This increase in population included the population shifting to a higher percentage of other immigrants including groups from Ireland, Scotland and Germany who tended to settle in their own groups along the area of the Atlantic shores. This growth was the key to launching the colonies into a successful bid for their independence.
Eight years of fighting this American War for independence, the Colonies were victorious. Within four years there was a government established. These newly formed United States were under a republican government where the power resided with the people.
The War had soldiers that presented themselves in some cases like a rag-tag army. With uniforms in a kaleidoscope of colors and some uniforms put together like grandma’s quilt. Other soldiers came from wealthy backgrounds and had the best of everything. There was no consistency, and this carried throughout most all of the battle. Despite the patriots deciding on browns as the official uniform color, the various groups of states still did their own thing.
For example; Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut wore white. Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia wore red. North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia wore blue with buttonholes edged with white, narrow tape or lace.
The head gear worn.
Brigadier Generals would have a white feather in their hat, while Majors would have a half black, half white feather. The epaulettes on the uniforms would also tell your rank by the number of stars you wore.
These unique Patriot uniforms are complete with stars, and various hats make up the collection of pieces and the ’sides’ of the revolutionary war themed chess set. Extraordinary detail in these pieces will allow you to enjoy a game of chess complete with memorabilia from a historic event that changed the face of the country we live in.
Themed chess sets provide entertainment for fans of various era’s in history.
